Join us on December 12th at 8 p.m. at Laboratorium in Skopje for the closing event of the Winter MakeDox program, featuring the screening of the award-winning documentary Gerlach, the Last Farmer (Netherlands, 2023, 76 min.), followed by a thought-provoking debate.
Gerlach, the Last Farmer by Luc Bauman and Aliona van der Horst, winner of last year’s IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), tells the story of Gerlach van Bynum, one of the last mixed crop farmers near Amsterdam. Amidst encroaching urban development, Gerlach, together with his friend Rinus, continues to cultivate the land in his own way, producing potatoes, beets, and other crops, while also serving as a hub for his neighbors and friends.
After the film, join a debate led by Andrijana Papić Manceva, Kiril Šentevski (filmmaker and activist), Aleksandar Nikolovski (Urban Garden “Bostanie”), and Milica Petrushevska (“Green Republic”) to discuss the impact of capitalism on the individual and the planet, as well as possible forms of resistance in our consumer-driven society.
The film captures Gerlach’s struggle against the forces of neoliberalism, including investors and municipal authorities seeking to turn his farmland into a commercial zone, while also addressing the devastating effects of climate change.
The screening and debate are supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in North Macedonia.
Admission is free for all attendees.
