We are thrilled to announce that Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Chemnitz (Germany) have taken over the title of European Capitals of Culture for 2025! 🎉 Over the next 12 months, these two vibrant cities will host a variety of cultural events, exhibitions, and performances that highlight the rich diversity of European cultures.
In addition to this incredible milestone, 2025 also marks the 40th anniversary of the European Capitals of Culture initiative, a celebration of the power of culture to connect cities and communities.
✨ Key Dates:
- Chemnitz: The official inauguration will take place on January 18, 2025
- Nova Gorica: The official inauguration will be held on February 8, 2025
Nova Gorica plans to grow alongside its Italian twin city Gorizia, creating a “European Capital of Culture without borders” where the concept of boundaries will be explored through cultural and artistic means.
Meanwhile, Chemnitz will celebrate its title under the motto “See the Unseen”, aiming to strengthen the role of civil society through cultural projects and build a network of “European Creators of Democracy.”
As a recognition of their exceptional preparations, the European Commission has awarded Nova Gorica and Chemnitz the Melina Mercouri Prize, which includes €1.5 million in funding through the Creative Europe program.
The title of European Capital of Culture brings long-term cultural, economic, and social benefits to the cities that hold it, contributing to local and regional development.
Looking ahead, Skopje will proudly hold the title of European Capital of Culture in 2028, alongside Bourges (France) and Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic).
